If you’ve never been to a social media Mom event, you haven’t seen the power of Moms and their connections. I was lucky to snag an invitation from Vera Sweeney, “I’m Not Obsessed,” and Audrey McClelland, “Mom Generations,” to their second “Getting Gorgeous” event. As if Audrey and Vera didn’t have enough on their plates, they decided to launch Getting Gorgeous. Launched last summer at Blogher, Getting Gorgeous was the talk of the event.
So how awesome was it to have a coveted ticket to this year’s event? Around 300 Moms circulated at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan on an equally gorgeous day for “Getting Gorgeous with Degree.” Moms came from as far away as Canada. I love when I can meet in real life some of the Moms I’ve only spoken to on Twitter despite the fact it’s hard to place avatar photos with the real thing.
Having a bad hair day? No worries. 3 hairdressers were on site to give you the perfect curls. In addition, Moms were able to socialize with their friends, received press kits, unique codes and samples of different company products. The expectations being they would love what they were given and go home and blog or tweet about it. To incentive them, many gave upwards of $1,000 winning prizes as a part of drawings for those who tweeted links to participating companies.
What kinds of companies?
Degree was the title sponsor highlighting the launch of their new motion sensitive deodorant. Weight Watchers with their new point system showed off a svelte Jennifer Hudson as their spokeperson. Mimosas made with Simply Orange Juice, Tide To Go stain removers. Hanes socks. Everything from makeup by NYX, skincare products by Belli, Sandals Resorts to Flipout Flipflops and more.
The best part?
Meeting so many Moms I’ve only spoken to through email or on Twitter. You’ll be seeing some of these new friends in upcoming interviews. And Moms like Linda Grant who is @NYCSingleMom and had this to say:
“As a single mom with no family to pitch in to help babysit, I really to have a good reason for paying $15 an hour for a babysitter and the Getting Gorgeous Event was so worth every penny. It was the perfect blend of being able network with brands, learning about cool new products, meeting new bloggers and catching up with ones I haven’t seen in a long time, all thanks to Audrey and Vera.”
