$5 = 50 Meals For Hungry Kids.

I skipped lunch yesterday. My stomach was growling and I was having a hard time concentrating as I tried to write this blog post. This is what 16 million children in America face every day. It’s an epidemic and one I found hard to believe existed in America–maybe a developing country, but America? But dig deeper and you will be astonished. With all that we have, America children are not getting enough to eat, going to bed hungry every night and put at serious risk for serious health issues because they aren’t getting the nourishment they need to live and to function at home or in school.

But today, I saw an amazing effort to raise awareness and money for Share Our Strength and No Kid Hungry. Never have I seen so many cupcakes in one place then as I saw at Sandra Lee’s World’s Largest Bake Sale. One baker alone told they had baked 400 of each item they made for the event. And they had made cupcakes, cookies and more. Multiply that by over 35 chefs who came together to support No Kid Hungry and The Food Bank for New York and you can start to imagine the amount of baked goods there were. Even the Guinness Book of Records showed up to record the magnitude.

Each baked good sold for $5. Why $5? Because through the efforts of the sponsors, $5 = 50 meals for kids. Imagine something as simple as a $5 donation having that kind of impact.

I had a coconut cream filled doughnut from the Doughnut Plant. And the lemon tarts and chocolate mousse was a mouthwatering combination from Serendipity. There’s nothing like having the perfect reason to eat desserts irrationally one after another than by having a great cause to support.

Celebrities like Sandra Lee, Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, Dylan Lauren, Buddy Valastro–The Cake Boss were all on hand. And Ty Pennington used his skills to build a bake sale stand that will be auctioned off for the cause. Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry is a national fundraising initiative presented by Kmart, Domino Sugar, Hasbro, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, C&H Sugar and Duncan Hines and even if you couldn’t make yesterday’s events, they’re hoping you’ll volunteer to host bake sales in your communities to support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America. The World’s Largest Bake Sale is the whole month of May so you have plenty of time to join the effort!

Here’s how you can help:

Visit the bake sale hub to make a virtual donation and send a Sandra Lee recipe card to raise money for No Kid Hungry.

Or register to become a baker
