The holidays are here and an estimated $1 billion was spent on Thanksgiving Day alone. That number does not include Black Friday sales or today’s Cyber Monday sales.
We have an opportunity to bring real meaning to this holiday season by giving to those in need: children. Consider this: with the economic downturn mothers will often do without to make sure their children have clothing or toys this holiday season.
#GivingTuesday is an idea to counter the conspicuous spending and promote true giving through social good.
Mommy Nearest, a top 10 ranked NYC mobile app for helping parents find interesting things to do with their children in New York City and Giggle, a premier baby store, are joining forces to enlist your help with #GivingTuesday. They are encouraging families to bring toys and clothing to the 92nd Street Y and all NYC locations of Giggle.
You can make your holiday giving a family affair. There’s nothing more important than teaching our children about need in the world and creating global citizens from an early age. I know as a mom in New York City, there is tremendous wealth and we often forget others aren’t as lucky. This event is a great opportunity to enlist your children’s help and teach them about social good and make them feel good. I remember once my daughter giving food to a homeless man and becoming overcome with emotion and bursting into tears. Since then she has donated clothes, worked in soup kitchens, participated in fundraisers and volunteered for several organizations. I am hoping it is the beginning of a lifetime of thinking of others.
Be sure to take and share a holiday photo with your family or friends when you donate.
Outside the 92nd Street Y, Mommy Nearest will have a motorbooth truck set up. Share your holiday photo with others along with the important message behind #GivingTuesday. You can also use the photo along with the hashtag #MommyNearest to enter the SparkBox Toys sweepstakes to win a year’s subscription. SparkBox Toys is like Netflix for toys–you choose the development stage and toys are shipped to you monthly. After your child is bored, you simply ship them back for your child’s next box. No more piles of toys in your home that no longer get played with. You can find more information here.
Download the MommyNearest app for NYC locations and maps.
The MommyNearest app can help you find the location of the 92nd Street Y but also all of the NYC Giggle locations and almost 14,000 child-friendly locations–including clean bathrooms! Think of it as a free, yet priceless gift for yourself–a tool every parent could totally use.
MOMentumNation loves supporting events like this and received compensation for #GivingTuesday, which will be donated.
