The beginning of the year is in full swing; as is the start of Manuary, the campaign to raise funds and awareness for neck Head and Neck cancers. While affecting both sexes, men are four times more likely than women to be affected by Head and Neck cancer, which is the fifth most common cancer in North America. In addition, this disease is rapidly becoming more common in young men due to newly discovered associations with human papillomavirus (HPV).
The campaign, which was initiated in London Ontario four years ago, kicked off with a shave off- where one of the founding doctors received an old fashioned, close barber shop shave. The campaign hopes to raise funds and awareness across Canada. This year, Kingston and Halifax have joined in the efforts along with London and Edmonton. London hopes to raise $50,000 from its center this year, up from $25000 last year. All monies raised go right back into research to help find a cure for this disease. Head and Neck Cancer is a devastating disease as it affects some of the most personal aspects of a patient’s life, including facial appearance and the ability to speak and eat.
This video that explains why this campaign is so important.
Participants can sign up individually or as a team at www.manuary.ca and encourage their friends, family and community to sponsor their beard growth via online or pledge donations. For every $250 raised, participants earn a Manuary raffle ticket to win a seven night stay in a luxury resort home in a gated community generously donated by Global Resort Homes in Kissimmee Florida – just minutes from Orlando and all the amusement parks!
“Can you think of a better excuse to grow a beard?” asks Dr. Leigh Sowerby, one of the founding doctors. “If you are unable to grow your own facial hair, no problem! There’s an app for that: simply visit the Manuary website.” Remember, this disease affects women as well.
So even if you don’t live in these centers, join in and sport a beard and know that you are helping to raise awareness for this devastating disease and help find a cure, as well as possibly getting a chance to win a great holiday!
